What is Back Pain or Stiffness?

Back pain and stiffness can happen at any point along the length of the spine. According to Statistics Canada, four out of five adults will experience back pain at some point in their lives, and occurs at equal frequency among men and women.

Symptoms of Back Pain or Stiffness:

Back pain is characterized by a range of symptoms, including pain, muscle tension, weakness in the legs and feet, tingling and burning sensations.

Who’s at Risk for Back Pain or Stiffness?

Everyone is at risk for back pain and stiffness. The condition may be the result of injury to the spine or back muscles, it may be caused by degenerated disc disease, sciatica, narrowing of the spine, weak core muscles, and people who perform heavy lifting.

Prevention:

Using proper weight distribution and lifting techniques can protect your back from injury. Maintaining strength and flexibility in the core muscle groups can help to protect one’s back from injury. The impact of weight loss and correct posture cannot be under-emphasized. However, it is important to note that as much as 85% of incidents of back pain can not be traced to a particular cause.
